The Arnold Electric “Why”
“My name is Jack Arnold. I’m just a kid originally from Johnsburg, IL. But my family roots are deeply embedded in Chicago.
My grandpa, John (Jack) Downes, who I am named after came to the United States on a boat in the early 1900’s from County Cork, Ireland. I’ve had the opportunity to visit Ellis Island and see the ships manifest that he was on and walk across the same “stairs of separation” he did. John settled on the Northwest Side of Chicago and had 9 kids. My grandma, Mary Downes, being one of them.
My grandma Mary is one of the most loyal Cub Fans that ever lived. Grandma Arnold remembers Wrigley Field like this: “I used to take the kids down to the ball game in a wagon. I’d park the wagon at the gate, we’d watch the game and we’d come back and the wagon was still there.”
Mary then married her husband, Tom Arnold. Tom was a streetcar conductor in Chicago about the time they had four children. The second oldest is my dad. My father, Pat Arnold, and his siblings grew up on the Northwest side of Chicago near School and Racine St. It was the typical Chicago family three-flat with three different relatives and their families living on each floor. Around 7-8th grade my grandparents moved their family out to the suburb of McHenry, IL.
Fast forward to the late ’70s, my dad Pat ended up pursuing a career as an electrician. After gaining the knowledge he needed, he started his own version of Arnold Electric. The business was operational until the late 90’s when he dissolved the company and finished the last 17 years of his career at a company in McHenry.
It was natural for me to follow in his footsteps, although during high school I didn’t want anything to do with being an electrician. That changed the day I graduated. The following Monday I was out in the field wiring new construction homes learning the trade on my own.
My career started out in a five-year apprentice program. I worked on commercial and industrial projects mainly. I was exposed to a variety of amazing types of electrical work that have helped me have a complete understanding of the entire industry.
When the recession hit in 2008 and I was out of work, I did the only thing I could think of. I started my own company, Arnold Electric Services, Inc. It was rough. It was rough because I thought I could do commercial and industrial work as a small, one-man shop. I was wrong.
I realized that in commercial and industrial work you don’t get an opportunity to build relationships with clients. I could also see there was a demand for a quality home service residential electrical company.
In 2017 we shifted all our energy and focus on serving residential homeowners. Arnold Electric is unique in that we are a home service residential electrical company owned and operated by electricians. That may seem unusual, but there are other companies that are home service electricians that are not run by electricians. It’s not the same experience.
So, we carved out our niche and haven’t looked back. We love building relationships with homeowners and teaching them about issues in their electrical system so they understand the work that needs to be done. This empowers the client so they can make the most educated decision that best suits their needs.”
