Electrical safety isn’t exactly common knowledge but is very important to keep in mind when at home or your job. Here are four electrical safety rules that everyone should follow to keep their family and home safe.
1. Keep All Objects and Fingers Out of Electrical Outlets
While this is a pretty well-known rule among adults, be sure to educate the younger ones around you to never stick anything, like a toy or a fork, into an electrical outlet. If you have children, try purchasing a pack of plastic outlet covers to stay extra safe.
2. Don’t Overload Your Power Strips
One way you could potentially cause an overloaded circuit and start a fire is to overload a power strip with an abundance of appliances. Be sure to never plug too many things into a power strip, and unplug anything if you’re not using it. Keep your large appliances plugged in at different parts of your home to ensure the safety of your circuits.
3. Keep Your Hair Products Away From Water
Be sure to be extra careful when using a hairdryer or flat iron when your sink is wet. A good thing to remember is to NEVER use anything that needs to be plugged into the wall when you’re sitting in the bath. This is another way you could potentially electrocute yourself.
4. Always Pull a Cord Out of the Outlet by the Plug
It’s important to remember to never pull out a cord from an outlet by the actual cord. This can put a strain on the inside wire, and it can do some extensive damage to the inside of the cord if done often enough. Make it a habit to pull a cord from the wall by the plug to avoid damaging the cord and potentially becoming a hazard.
