Who Is Responsible For Electric Meter Repairs?
Here in the city of Chicago, Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) is one of the main energy companies permitted to deliver electricity supply to customers in Illinois. ComEd is also the company responsible for excavating the ground and installing electric meters for your property. However, when it comes to services like electric meter repair, ComEd or other energy companies are not always entirely responsible.
Electrical Meter Repair
Whether you have a smart meter or a standard meter, there are different parts of the equipment that you as a customer are responsible for if you need an electrical meter repair.
ComEd is only responsible for service damage that involves the electrical service wire and the meter itself. If ComEd is responsible for a repair, they will reseed or resod the area back to its original state.
The customer is responsible for damage to the attachment between the ComEd equipment and the customer’s property. They are also responsible for the entry point for the wires that go to the meter box. The riser/raceway (the enclosure that physically protects the wires that go into the meter box) is also the customer’s responsibility. Lastly, the meter enclosure is the customer’s responsibility if it becomes damaged.
If the customer causes any damage to underground services, they are required to pay fees related to cable repairs, reseeding and additional landscape damages (fences, patio, etc.).
Type Of Services
ComEd provides several services, since groundwork usually results in some damage to your property. Some typical ground repair services include:
- Digging in the repair or replacement of underground cables
- Power pole replacement or repair
- Damage caused by construction vehicle tires or other equipment
When Can I Schedule a Service?
Due to Chicago’s cold weather, the seasons determine when ground repair work is possible. Typically, this work schedule ranges from April through October, which is when the ground is soft enough to excavate, replant and reseed. Sometimes, if the winter season is severe enough, services are postponed until the spring thaw.
